10 Ways to have a healthy mindset

Master Your Mindset

When most people attempt to get healthy, they focus on what they want to change PHYSICALLY. But a healthy mindset is JUST as important as your physical health. If you have a positive state of mind, you’ll be much better able to function in your day to day life, especially when a challenge arises. It is hard to stay committed to a healthy, physical lifestyle if you can’t keep your head in a positive space.

Here are my top tips on how to have a positive mind:

1. Learn To Love You For YOU

Many people struggle every day with self-esteem and self-worth. All day long we are bombarded with images and running commentary telling us how we are “supposed” to look and behave. It can be hard to love ourselves when we are constantly comparing ourselves to others.

It’s great to strive to be better, to be healthier and to be happier – but you must always remember that you can only do it for you, not for anyone else. You’re never going to look like anyone else. You will only ever look like an improved you. If you focus on being the best version of YOU, you will feel so much happier as you aren’t constantly comparing yourself to others.

2. Fuel The Body To Fuel The Mind

If you eat a diet of highly processed foods that have little nutritional benefit, you are doing your body a disservice. If you eat clean, fresh, whole foods, your body will function better and your brain will too.

Processed foods contain synthetic chemicals that impact your brain in a negative way. If you find yourself constantly feeling anxious or stressed out, try cutting out caffeine and foods that contain large amounts of sugar and salt. You will feel so much better!

3. Surround Yourself With Positive People

Being around people who are happy and share your goals and ambitions will improve your mindset and well being. Take the time out to socialise with your friends and have fun! Feeling appreciated, loved and laughing helps to keep your mental health in check. If these people are positive, encouraging and supportive of you and your goals, you’ll feel even more motivated to strive towards them. If you have relationships in your life that don’t make you feel this way, it might be time to re-examine whether or not they are worth keeping.

4. Appreciate The Little Things

Our lives these days can be so hectic. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed with everything we have going on that we end up forgetting what is really important in life. Slow down. Breathe. Go for a walk. Notice all you see. Meditate. Say hi to a stranger. Enjoy time with your pet.

Take everything in, without doing it through your phone screen. Doing things like this a few times a week will help keep you grounded and keep your mindset on the positive things in life.

5. Find A Hobby

Maybe you love to paint, play a musical instrument or have always wanted to complete a 10,000 piece puzzle.

Whatever it is you enjoy doing, do it! Taking some time out to dedicate just to yourself will help you cope with stress, focus your mind and allow you to express yourself. Doing things that make YOU happy helps to keep your mindset happy.

6. Getting A Change Of Scenery

Sometimes we get stuck in a rut, it happens to all of us! Taking a holiday is a great way to relax, improve your mood and see more of the world.

However, not all of us are lucky enough to jet off into the sun whenever we feel like it. But there are much simpler (and less expensive) ways of taking a break from our day-to-day routine which can do just as much to improve your mindset.

Taking a different route to work or just moving the furniture around will help your mind in being able to experience new things and cope with different situations.

7. Talk About Your Feelings

Many of us keep a lot of our feelings ‘in’ because we don’t want to bother people with our problems. However, talking about our feelings can help us process and work through them. If you are not interested in talking it out, try writing in a journal (I recommend the Self Journal). You will have not only expressed your feelings, but you can also go back and look at what you wrote and better understand yourself.

8. Review Your Life Regularly

The older we get, the faster time seems to fly. We may have goals in mind that we would like to achieve, but how often do you sit down and track their progress? Sit down every few months and have an honest look at what you are doing in life. This helps us to be real with ourselves and maybe adjust our path’s if what we are doing is not working.

9. Focus On What You Can Control

Not everything will go according to plan, every time. And that’s okay. Worrying about things you are powerless to change will only stress you out. Look at what you can control. If these task still seems too large, break it down into smaller tasks. There will always be something in life you are unable to control. Identify it and let it go.

10. Use Failure To Encourage Success

If you are one of those people that get very dejected when you fail at something, learn to use this to create success! It can be hard failing but each time we fail, there is a lesson that will help us grow. Learn from these mistakes and do better the next time around. If you give up each time something goes wrong, you will encourage having a low sense of self-worth and may become too scared to ever try again.

I hope these tips have helped. If you have any other tips on how you keep a positive state of mind, I’d love to hear them.
