After 22 Years, My Body Began Healing Again

After years of under-fuelling, over-exercising and believing her health was beyond repair, Maria’s journey proves that recovery is possible with the right support.

For years, I believed that the leaner I became, the healthier I would be.

I trained every day, carefully controlled my calorie intake and became completely consumed by chasing the lowest body fat percentage possible. The number on my body composition scales dictated how I felt about myself. Every decision I made, from how much I exercised to how much I ate, revolved around becoming leaner.

What I didn’t realise was that my body was paying a devastating price.

Years of chronic under-fuelling and over-exercising had left me with multiple metatarsal stress fractures and severe osteoporosis. My hormones had effectively shut down, and I had lived with amenorrhoea (No Period) for 22 years. After so long without a menstrual cycle, I had reached a point where I genuinely believed it would never return.

Whether that belief came from what I had been told or simply what I had come to accept, I believed this was now my future.

Looking back now, I wasn’t healthy at all.

I was surviving.

Ironically, I first contacted Joseph because I wanted help getting leaner while building more muscle without relying on excessive cardio after another stress fracture.

It didn’t take long for both of us to realise that losing more body fat wasn’t the answer. My body didn’t need to be pushed harder.

It needed permission to recover.

Together, we deliberately accepted that my body fat would increase because the goal was no longer to become as lean as possible. The goal was to restore my health.

Mentally, that was one of the hardest things I have ever done. For years, I had associated gaining body fat with failure. Joseph patiently helped me understand that sometimes the healthiest body isn’t the leanest body.

From that point onwards, everything changed.

There wasn’t a magic programme, a strict diet or a quick fix. Instead, there were hundreds of conversations, small adjustments, reassurance when fear crept in and a level of support that made me feel I was never facing the journey alone.

Whenever I doubted the process or panicked about changes in my body composition, Joseph was there to listen without judgement, explain what was happening and help me see the bigger picture.

I could message him whenever I needed support, and he always took the time to help me work through my concerns. Rather than simply coaching my nutrition and training, he helped me rebuild my relationship with my body.

Slowly, I stopped allowing the scales to control my emotions. I reduced my training, prioritised recovery, slept more, fuelled my body properly and began replacing fear with trust.

Then something happened that I never truly believed was possible.

After 22 years, my menstrual cycle returned naturally.

For many people, that might sound like a small thing.

For me, it represented the return of my health.

It was confirmation that my body was finally recovering after decades of restriction and over-exercise. It remains the single greatest achievement of this entire journey because it proved my body hadn’t given up on me after all.

The physical changes have been incredible too. I have built significantly more muscle, more than doubled my strength and reached a healthier body composition. But the biggest transformation has been the freedom I’ve gained.

I no longer feel controlled by the scales. I no longer walk 40,000 steps every day out of fear. I now strength train four days a week, prioritise recovery, sleep better and actually enjoy life again.

Friends tell me I look healthier, happier and more relaxed. My mum was amazed when my menstrual cycle returned because neither of us believed it would ever happen.

Perhaps the greatest gift of all is that I now have hope for the future again.

For the first time in decades, I feel as though possibilities that I had long accepted were gone may no longer be out of reach. The return of my menstrual cycle hasn’t just restored my health; it has reopened the possibility of having a family one day. Whether or not that happens, simply knowing that the choice may exist again is something I never thought I’d experience.

Looking back, I realise this journey was never really about losing body fat.

It was about getting my life back.

If you’re considering working with Joseph, my advice is simple.

Trust him.

He won’t just help you change your body. He’ll help you change the way you think about your health, often without you even realising it’s happening.

I only wish I’d started the journey much sooner.

Maria.
